In short

Phia rates your prices on product pages, says it applies coupons at checkout and records the order, and earns affiliate commission when it gets the credit; its rewards are a share of that commission. It was reported to fire affiliate links without a click on iPhone and says it removed that on 7 July 2026. It publishes no opt-out. On Shopify you can hide its desktop prompts and control which codes work.

It's late October. You're closing September's affiliate report before the peak rate bump. One sub-network's line climbed from October to July, then fell back. Someone sends a news link about Phia. You search your network's publisher list and find nothing.

Then you search your brand on phia.com. There's a page with discount codes, and product pages comparing your prices with secondhand listings. Your developer asks whether the extension is on your store, and where.

This guide covers what Phia does on a Shopify store, page by page; who pays for its coupons and rewards; where it appears in your affiliate data; where the 2026 allegations stand; and what you can control before peak.

What does it do on a Shopify store?#

On your product pages, the Phia extension rates your price against new and secondhand listings and can point shoppers elsewhere. At checkout, Phia says it applies coupons; its privacy policy describes recording completed purchases. Its terms say it may earn commission from the retailer or network, and its rewards terms count only purchases attributed to Phia. Phia Holdings, Inc. runs this AI fashion shopping assistant, listed on the App Store since January 2025. An AI shopping agent helps shoppers find and compare products; a coupon extension brings code-finding into their browser. Its surfaces are the Chrome extension on desktop and the Safari extension that comes with its iPhone app. See Phia's page in the extension directory. Phia announced a $35 million Series A at a $185 million valuation on 27 January 2026. Phia says it has 1.5 million users; TechCrunch's January report gave hundreds of thousands of monthly active users, a different measure. The US App Store showed 22,796 ratings on 23 October. 220,000+

sites, new and secondhand, that Phia says it compares across in its October 2026 App Store listing. It's Phia's own figure.

Your product page. Chrome's listing, which still says 40,000+ retail and resale partners, pitches a "Should I Buy This?" button that compares the item with real-time retail and secondhand listings, and says Phia connects shoppers to 150+ secondhand platforms. It never mentions coupons, codes or checkout. TechCrunch illustrates the comparison with a $200 dress available secondhand for $80, and says Phia can recommend similar items from cheaper brands through its partnerships. [Chrome Web Store, Oct 2026] (opens the source)[TechCrunch, Jan 2026] (opens the source)

Electric Runway's September 2025 demo at 01:29 shows the overlay pointing from a retailer's product page to used listings. This cost comes before any question of attribution: your shopper is on your page and being shown somewhere else to buy.

Your checkout. Phia's homepage promises automatic code application, or auto-apply; its App Store listing adds "exclusive codes only available to Phia users". The 22 October release notes describe more reliable coupon checkout and Rewards activation in the Safari extension. Edelman's August iPhone test instead showed a coupons slider asking the shopper to copy and paste codes. No published test shows its behaviour on a Shopify checkout. [Phia, Oct 2026] (opens the source)[Apple App Store, Oct 2026] (opens the source)[Benjamin Edelman, Aug 2026] (opens the source)

Its catalogue of your products. Product identifiers on Phia name affiliate networks, eBay and Shopify as sources. One Shopify fashion store's listing carried that store's own Shopify product and variant IDs. Phia doesn't say how it collects them, and a network name in an identifier shows where a listing came from, not a live partnership. Its Buy button sends the shopper through Phia's own redirect. Its product pages list codes under the line "Auto-apply these coupons with the Phia extension", and Phia doesn't say where those codes come from. [Phia, Sep 2026] (opens the source)

Your confirmation page. Its privacy policy, updated 15 October 2026, says it "may detect when you complete a checkout on a supported retailer's website". It lists item and price details plus "order number, merchant name, and order date", excludes card numbers, security codes and passwords, and also lists cart items, mouse movements, keystrokes, other shopping sites' content and installed extensions. These are its disclosures, not observations on your store. [Phia, Oct 2026] (opens the source)

Content scripts read and change the pages a shopper visits, which is what an extension's browser extension permissions allow. Mobile-security vendor NowSecure's November 2025 analysis of an older Safari build found an allowlist of about 29,000 shopping sites; Phia's current claim is 220,000+. Who pays for the coupons and rewards it offers?#

You do when Phia is the credited affiliate: commission comes from you or your network, rewards take a share of that commission, and the coupon discount comes off your margin. Its terms name eBay Partner Network among its affiliate relationships. [Phia, Oct 2026] (opens the source)[Phia, Apr 2026] (opens the source)

Its help page describes earnings from secondhand partners only. Its homepage, App Store, rewards terms and press release describe retailers and coupons too. An affiliate network tracks referrals and payments; under last-click attribution, the final eligible referral gets credit. The rewards terms, updated 12 April 2026, require tracked purchases attributed to Phia that generate commission. Points take a share of commission received, with each point worth $0.001. They remain pending until merchant confirmation, potentially about 90 days or longer, and can be reversed if commission isn't received. Your commission funds the reward, giving Phia a reason to hold the last click. [Phia, Apr 2026] (opens the source)

For brands, Phia pitches a "zero-dollar upfront, performance-based model". Its September 2025 Brand Partner Program offered priority search and feed placement. Its homepage's For brands block has no partner link or contact; the January release promised dashboards, but none was found by 23 October. Run your numbers in the coupon extension cost calculator.

Phia says its shoppers convert better, spend more and return less, without publishing a method. Its lead seed investor, Kleiner Perkins, describes US shoppers as price-selective, deal-driven and less brand-loyal. If that holds for your store, your own incrementality measurement should show sales the partner caused. [Phia via GlobeNewswire, Jan 2026] (opens the source)[Fortune, Sep 2025] (opens the source)

Where does it show up in your affiliate data?#

Either Phia is a publisher in your programme, or it sits inside another publisher's traffic as a sub-affiliate, where reports may never name it. Edelman describes this second route in his July research and on Always Be Testing at 23:08. [Benjamin Edelman, Jul 2026] (opens the source)

Phia had more than 5,000 direct brand partners in September 2025, according to its lead investor and Fortune, and reported 9,600 brand partners in May 2026. [Kleiner Perkins, Sep 2025] (opens the source)[Fortune, Sep 2025] (opens the source)[Vogue, May 2026] (opens the source)

6,200+

retail brands Phia said it had partnered with in January 2026, when it raised its Series A. The January and May counts are Phia's; the September count came from its investor and Fortune.

Phia via GlobeNewswire, Jan 2026(opens the source)

Those are two different costs. When an extension affiliate, an affiliate publisher that runs browser software, fails to stand down for another partner's click, commission moves from that partner to the extension. When it fires an affiliate link the shopper never clicked, you pay commission on a sale no affiliate drove. Edelman draws that line on Always Be Testing at 20:45, and both fall under affiliate hijacking. He also warns that a merchant on more than one network can pay twice for one sale. [Vogue Business, Sep 2026] (opens the source)

Edelman says merchants who work with Phia "can see when its clicks and conversions grew". He dates the cookie refresh to October 2025, on-exit clicks to November 2025 and the cart-time auto-drop to December 2025, and Phia says the features were removed on 7 July 2026, so look at October 2025 to July 2026. What was it accused of, and where does that stand?#

In July and August 2026, Bloomberg and the researcher Ben Edelman reported that Phia's Safari extension on iPhone fired affiliate links without a shopper's click, mostly at the cart and checkout, so Phia was credited with sales it didn't drive. Phia says it removed those features on 7 July 2026. As of 23 October, no federal court case naming Phia and no FTC action was found. Early July. Competing extension Capital One Shopping emailed affiliate managers under "Review Needed: Phia Extension Faking Clicks". Phia replied that networks had reviewed it as compliant and called Capital One a competitor. [Affiliate for Publicists, Jul 2026] (opens the source)

9 July. Bloomberg's first report appeared, following mobile tests across more than 50 websites. Edelman dated the server-controlled feature to version 1.9.33, shipped 13 December 2025. It invoked affiliate links without user action and was always off for Chrome in his tests. More than 50%

of Phia cart sessions included an affiliate click after the on-exit code shipped in November 2025, against under 10% before, in one tracking service's data. These are click shares, not orders or commission.

Benjamin Edelman, Aug 2026(opens the source)

Bloomberg's follow-up reported Slack messages and a dashboard showing "enable coupon auto drop" on from 10 December 2025 to 7 July 2026. Bloomberg also reported that a Phia data scientist's internal estimate put about half of June's claimed merchandise value down to the practice; Phia says the method overstated it. [Bloomberg via Fortune, Aug 2026] (opens the source)[Quartz, Aug 2026] (opens the source)

Phia initially said a release caused misattributions, then said it was reviewing every transaction, issuing reversals and hiring a compliance head. In a statement to The Cool Down, published 5 October, it disputed the cookie-stuffing label, citing app downloads and consent pop-ups with cookie disclosures. [Engadget, Jul 2026] (opens the source)[TechCrunch, Aug 2026] (opens the source)[The Cool Down via Yahoo Finance, Oct 2026] (opens the source)

impact.com suspended Phia from its marketplace and reprocessed unpaid actions from 20 June to 29 July, reattributing or refunding them, without addressing earlier payments. Phia says its existing impact.com partnerships resumed on 29 July. Rakuten Advertising told Business Insider at the end of July that it was investigating, and Bloomberg reported in July that Awin was reviewing the allegations. On 23 October, Chrome listed version 1.10.90, updated 17 October, Featured, with "no history of violations"; the iPhone app was updated 22 October. Federal docket searches found no Phia Holdings or founder case; The Phia Group is unrelated. No FTC case named Phia. Merchants aren't parties to anything here, but the commission at issue is commission merchants paid. Phia says the features are gone; nothing published since August shows what its servers tell the extension today, so the check is on your own traffic. The cookie stuffing guide has the full account.

What can you control on your storefront, at checkout and in your programme?#

Your storefront theme is yours, so the desktop extension's prompts there can be detected and hidden. Shopify's checkout isn't, so at checkout your control is which codes exist and work. In your programme you decide who gets paid, sub-affiliates included. The extension and the iPhone app are the shopper's, and Phia publishes no merchant opt-out. [Phia, Oct 2026] (opens the source)[Phia, Oct 2026] (opens the source)

Content scripts run in the shopper's browser with access to the page. On iPhone, Apple lets shoppers switch extensions on or off per website; merchants can't operate that switch. Shopify checkout UI extensions run in an isolated sandbox and require Plus on information, shipping and payment steps. App web pixels run in a strict sandbox without page read/write access, and checkout.liquid is unsupported on those steps. Nothing an app runs inside checkout can see or remove the shopper's extension. Restrict codes to customers or segments, set usage limits, limit combinations and deactivate leaked codes. If you never issued Phia an exclusive code, ask where its listed codes came from. With no direct or sub-affiliate relationship you pay it nothing, but it can still rate prices, show codes and record supported purchases. Its only published partner contact sits under a question for resale partners; its terms have no merchant clause or stand-down policy, and phia.com/partners shows a not-found page. What can you do without an app?#

You can inspect your listings, trace sources, challenge open commission and tighten codes before your freeze. Give each job an owner.

  1. See what Phia shows for your store. Your ecommerce lead checks phia.com for your brand's codes, product-page price verdicts and Buy redirects, then runs the free code check for the extensions and voucher sites it reads. Phia isn't one of them. The catch: listings don't identify orders it touched.

  2. Find it in every programme, including inside other publishers. Your affiliate manager searches publisher lists, requests each sub-network's source list, and checks click and conversion growth from October 2025 to July 2026. The catch: sources may remain undisclosed; removal stops commission, not the extension. [Benjamin Edelman, Jul 2026] (opens the source)[Benjamin Edelman, Aug 2026] (opens the source)

  3. Claim what's still open. Your affiliate manager asks networks which orders and dates they reprocessed. impact.com's window covered unpaid actions from 20 June to 29 July. Reverse before lock; impact.com support must handle reattribution before lock. Decline within Awin's validation window and ask Phia what its promised reversals cover on your account. The catch: once commission has locked and been paid, the network's reversal tools no longer apply; getting it back means a claim against the publisher. [Business Insider, Jul 2026] (opens the source)[impact.com Help Center, Oct 2026] (opens the source)[Awin, Oct 2026] (opens the source)[TechCrunch, Aug 2026] (opens the source)

  4. Write software rules into your terms. Your affiliate manager requires a shopper's click, stand-down for prior partners, source IDs, approval for software sub-affiliates, and code credit only for the issued partner. CJ's rule, quoted by Edelman, says software "may not be used to force clicks". Read what your affiliate agreement should say and impact.com's stand-down policy. [Benjamin Edelman, Jul 2026] (opens the source)[impact.com Help Center, Oct 2026] (opens the source) The catch: terms only bite if someone checks, and on platforms like impact.com and Partnerize, the Chief of Chaos newsletter says, enforcement falls largely on the brand. [Chief of Chaos, Aug 2026] (opens the source)

  5. Test iPhone as well as Chrome. Your developer uses a clean Chrome profile and a test iPhone with the app's Safari extension: arrive through a test affiliate link, fill a basket, open and dismiss the prompt, record links fired. Edelman says server decisions can vary by shopping and browsing history, IP address and device. The catch: one clean phone on one day doesn't represent every shopper. [Benjamin Edelman, Jul 2026] (opens the source)

  6. Retire leaked codes, then measure. Your discount owner deactivates private codes listed on Phia, uses unique or single-use replacements, and restricts segments and uses before the code freeze. Shopify permits 20,000,000 unique codes; bulk creation uses apps or the Admin API. [Shopify Help Center, Oct 2026] (opens the source)[Shopify.dev, Oct 2026] (opens the source) Follow unique vs shared codes and stopping code leaks. Your growth lead runs holdout measurement, leaving a random slice unchanged, using the how-to guides. The catch: small stores need weeks; a November start won't read before Cyber Monday.

The same controls apply to Honey, Capital One Shopping, Coupert, Rakuten, Klarna and RetailMeNot: follow coupon extensions 101, or evaluate a partnership before a deal.

How Benson handles the extension on your store#

See your sessions. The free plan includes extension detection and observe mode: which coupon and cashback extensions your shoppers run, Phia's Chrome extension included, in which sessions, and what Benson would hide. Install from the Shopify App Store; observe mode changes nothing on your store. The Checkout rules page lists codes used most in extension sessions; code watch shows whether a leaked code is contained, replaced or spreading through its replacement.

Hide storefront prompts. Benson detects Phia's Chrome extension and hides its desktop prompts. Block, on Pro, covers home, product, collection, search and cart pages and the cart drawer, with schedule, country, source, device and page rules, plus a holdout.

Sample store
A coupon extension's pop-up hidden on a product page. Sample data.

Control accepted codes. Strict checkout rules, on Pro, allow only allowlisted codes in coupon-extension sessions; others get a short message instead of a discount. Customers without an extension who type your code still get it. On Shopify no app can change an extension's checkout display, so protection there works on codes.

Sample store
Codes tried in coupon-extension sessions, and which ones your checkout rules allow. Sample data.

Read affiliate changes. Under Affiliates → Integrity, Benson records the arriving affiliate click and later changes. Three checks fit this review:

  • Extension took the click: a partner's click was replaced while a coupon or cashback extension was on the page.
  • Tracking set without a visit (beta): a partner's click set on a shopper who never chose to visit, such as a page loaded in a background tab or pop-under, or seconds after another affiliate click with no input in between. It needs no extension detected, and the case opens under the publisher whose click it was, which is where a sub-affiliate shows up. Each case lists the orders and the commission at your rates, with the sequence of clicks behind it.
  • Extension didn't stand down (beta): the Stand-down page scores each extension on each network your partners use. Installed extensions show only on desktop Chrome, in sessions your consent settings permit Benson to track.

Checks and counts are free on every plan; cases, evidence and printable packs need Pro. Read how integrity checks work and the affiliate integrity reading path.

Sample store
Where the shopper arrived from, and where the credit changed. Sample data.

Review commission before lock. Under Affiliates → Commission review, Benson turns cases into orders to decline, writing Awin, CJ, impact.com and Tradedoubler files, plus CSV for networks without a published format. You upload it; Benson needs no network login. Counts are on every plan; review and downloads need Pro.

Review your deal. If Phia is in your programme, record its deal and, with attribution integrity on Pro, read how often it joins after the cart. Keep, renegotiate or cut using the partner deal playbook.

Record the deal, read how often the partner joins after the cart, then keep, renegotiate or cut.

Every control can run against a holdout, measuring the result on your store.

To start, add Benson from the Shopify App Store and leave it in observe mode through a normal week before peak.

Questions merchants ask

Can you block Phia on a Shopify store?
Its desktop prompts on your storefront can be hidden. Nothing changes its display inside Shopify checkout or in the iPhone app: codes are your checkout control. Phia publishes no merchant opt-out.
How does Phia make money?
It earns affiliate commission from retailers or networks when it is the credited affiliate, and its shopper rewards take a share of that commission. It also offers brands placement on a performance basis.
Is Phia legit?
It's a funded company with listed extensions offering price comparison, coupons and rewards as described in its listings. In 2026 it was reported to have taken credit for sales it didn't drive, and says it removed those features on 7 July. No court case or regulator action on the allegations was found as of 23 October 2026.
Did impact.com ban Phia?
No. It suspended Phia from its marketplace and reprocessed unpaid actions from 20 June to 29 July 2026. Phia says its existing impact.com partnerships resumed on 29 July.
Is there a Phia lawsuit?
No federal docket naming the shopping company or its founders was found as of 23 October 2026. Cases against The Phia Group concern an unrelated company.
Does Phia stand down for affiliate links?
It publishes no stand-down policy. Edelman's July 2026 tests found it didn't stand down for another affiliate's click. Measure it on your own traffic.
Is Phia a Shopify app I can uninstall?
No. It runs in the shopper's browser and phone, not in your Shopify admin, so there's nothing to uninstall on your side.
