What the Rakuten extension does on your Shopify store, and how to control it
The Rakuten extension's terms say its cookie replaces earlier affiliates' once a shopper accepts. What it does on Shopify, what it costs, what you control.

In short
It's Monday after your creator's weekend push. Their email says link clicks rose, but commissions didn't. You open the network report: Rakuten has credit for a run of the weekend's orders.
Someone pastes its terms into the team channel: accepting its offer overwrites earlier affiliates' tracking, including "tracking mechanisms from other affiliate marketing companies". [Rakuten Help Center, Mar 2026] (opens the source) Someone suggests uninstalling the Shopify app; your developer says that's the network's tracking. Nobody can say which orders the creator started.
This guide covers what the Rakuten extension does on your Shopify store, who funds its cash back, what its terms say about your partners' clicks, what happens if you drop it, and what you can control before peak.
What does the extension do on a Shopify store?#
The Rakuten extension prompts shoppers to activate cash back on participating stores and offers coupons at checkout. Without a deal, it suggests a similar store that has one; it also shows offers in search results. [Rakuten Help Center, Oct 2026] (opens the source) [Rakuten Help Center, Oct 2025] (opens the source)
This cashback extension displays its prompt automatically. Your shopper must select "Activate Cash Back" on every visit: the toolbar icon is red before activation, blue afterwards. [Rakuten Help Center, Oct 2026] (opens the source)
Its store listing says Coupon Magic finds and automatically applies the best coupons and Price Magic searches for lower prices, and names Google, Yahoo and Bing for its search-result offers. [Chrome Web Store (Internet Archive copy), Aug 2026] (opens the source) Its terms say it collects browsing information whether or not the shopper interacts with it, including products, coupons and cart contents, and reads order contents and totals from confirmation pages for Instant Cash Back. Your developer should include that page in the review. [Rakuten Help Center, Mar 2026] (opens the source)
Its Edge and Firefox packages request tabs, webNavigation, webRequest, cookies and scripting, with host access to every site (<all_urls>). Edge's declared page-load script matches only Rakuten domains; Chrome permissions weren't read. Those permissions describe access, not observed activity. [Microsoft Edge Add-ons, Oct 2026] (opens the source) [Mozilla Add-ons (AMO API), Sep 2026] (opens the source)
Rakuten doesn't disclose where its codes come from in its terms, help or listings.

On 19 October 2026, Edge reported 1,367,899 active installs, updated 12 October, and Firefox 116,272 average daily users. [Microsoft Edge Add-ons, Oct 2026] (opens the source) [Mozilla Add-ons (AMO API), Sep 2026] (opens the source) Keep those measures separate. Keep the businesses separate. Rakuten Rewards belongs to Rakuten Group. [Rakuten Group, Inc., Feb 2026] (opens the source) Formerly Ebates, it's operated by Ebates Performance Marketing, Inc. [Rakuten Advertising, Aug 2020] (opens the source) [U.S. District Court, N.D. California, Sep 2026] (opens the source) Rakuten Advertising is the separate affiliate network: its Shopify app installs your tracking pixel. [Elevar (docs), Jan 2026] (opens the source) It removed Honey on 12 January 2026. [Hello Partner, Jan 2026] (opens the source) Uninstalling that app removes your programme's tracking, with no effect on shoppers' extensions.
The same company runs rakuten.co.uk, advertising cashback at 500+ brands in an April 2026 capture, so the guide applies to UK shoppers too. [Rakuten Rewards UK (Internet Archive copy), Apr 2026] (opens the source) Rakuten's directory page collects the extension's sources.
Who pays for the cash back?#
You do: stores pay commission on credited orders; Rakuten keeps part and passes the rest to shoppers. Its sales FAQ gives a standard 50/50 split, with paid placements on top. [Rakuten Help Center, Oct 2026] (opens the source) [Rakuten Rewards (for business), Oct 2026] (opens the source)
Rakuten sets the shopper's rate when a store joins; merchants may also pay for promotion. [Rakuten Help Center, Oct 2026] (opens the source) Cash back uses the net purchase amount, excluding discounts. [Rakuten Help Center, Oct 2025] (opens the source)
Ten of 13 DTC store pages captured between March and June 2026 showed 2% cash back, including Everlane and Bombas. [Rakuten (Internet Archive copy), Mar 2026] (opens the source) [Rakuten (Internet Archive copy), Apr 2026] (opens the source) That's the shopper's rate. No merchant rate card is published; one October 2026 optical-retailer case study gives 15% commission. [Rakuten Rewards (for business), Oct 2026] (opens the source)
Under Classic Rewards, every campaign, placement and date is bought separately. Search ads, Similar Store Conquesting and Price Magic Conquesting appear under "Win share from competitors". Run your figures in the coupon extension cost calculator.
Rakuten ran and published a random zero/non-zero cash-back split among its members at one department store, reporting a 13% incremental revenue lift. [Rakuten Rewards (for business), Oct 2024] (opens the source) Haus, which sells incrementality tests, reported in 2023 that one DTC brand saw no revenue change after switching off all its US loyalty partners for seven weeks; partners weren't named, so it isn't a Rakuten result. [Haus, May 2023] (opens the source) PartnerCentric's CEO favours paying for contribution over cutting partners. [PartnerCentric, Feb 2025] (opens the source) The answer needs a test on your traffic.
What do its terms say about your partners' clicks?#
Accepting the cash-back offer replaces earlier affiliates' tracking for your store, according to the extension terms. The wording dates to at least June 2025. [Rakuten Help Center, Mar 2026] (opens the source) [Rakuten Help Center (Internet Archive copy), Jun 2025] (opens the source)
6 Jun 2025
is the earliest terms version found saying "will overwrite". The August 2024 version, captured through March 2025, said "not automatically overwrite"; no intervening captures pinpoint the change.
| Version | What it says about other affiliates' cookies |
|---|---|
| 25 June and 14 August 2024, captured through 18 March 2025 | "will not automatically overwrite those cookies or shopping session", but may offer activation. [Rakuten Help Center (Internet Archive copy), Aug 2024] (opens the source) |
| 6 June 2025, captured 17 November 2025 | After acceptance, Rakuten's cookie "will overwrite" earlier affiliates' cookies or similar tracking devices. [Rakuten Help Center (Internet Archive copy), Jun 2025] (opens the source) |
| Terms & Conditions, 15 October 2025, section 6.2(b) | Same overwrite-after-acceptance sentence. [Rakuten Help Center, Oct 2025] (opens the source) |
| 13 March 2026 | "will overwrite any cookies or other similar tracking mechanisms", after acceptance. [Rakuten Help Center, Mar 2026] (opens the source) |
Both versions tie the outcome to the shopper accepting the offer, so this isn't a reversal: the newer text describes what that click does more plainly. For your partners the result is the same. On a last-click network, the click that sent the shopper stops being the last one.
When another coupon or rewards link takes over, Rakuten's help offers re-activation and asks members to disable or uninstall competing extensions. [Rakuten Help Center, Apr 2026] (opens the source) Another help page warns that those extensions can redirect trips and take order credit: the same contest from its side. [Rakuten Help Center, Feb 2026] (opens the source)
Separate the stand-down rules. Rakuten Advertising's policy, updated 13 July 2026, requires network publishers' extensions and AI assistants to stand down on another publisher's referrals. Detection names its own linksynergy links and lsclick_mid# cookie; other networks, your channels and Rewards aren't named. [Rakuten Advertising, Jul 2026] (opens the source)
Rakuten Rewards published a stand-down kit in May 2026. It ships without network rules; neither the repository nor coverage says its own extension uses it. [Rakuten Rewards (GitHub), Oct 2026] (opens the source) [PPC Land, May 2026] (opens the source) No source says the extension stands down for your partners. Chrome requires related user action before each affiliate code, link or cookie, not stand-down; activation supplies that action. [Chrome for Developers, Mar 2025] (opens the source)
Your shopper arrives through a creator's link, fills the basket and clicks "Activate Cash Back": under last-click attribution, credit goes to Rakuten, with the creator's commission governed by your network rules. See stand-down and the cookie stuffing guide.
Codes can cut the other way. Rakuten warns outside codes can override its tracking and void cash back, including on its Gymshark page. Ask your network which wins when your partner's code meets Rakuten's cookie. [Rakuten Help Center, Jul 2026] (opens the source) [Rakuten (Internet Archive copy), May 2026] (opens the source)
What happens if it isn't in your affiliate programme?#
You stop paying commission, but the extension still runs and can suggest a similar store offering cash back. Rakuten publishes no merchant opt-out. Its help and July 2026 video describe that suggestion. [Rakuten Help Center, Oct 2026] (opens the source) [Rakuten (YouTube), Jul 2026] (opens the source)
Its April 2025 Similar Store sales post offers advertising "directly on competitor sites", in the screen's top-right corner. [Rakuten Rewards (for business), Apr 2025] (opens the source) February 2025's Price Magic post describes matching product identifiers, then sending shoppers to the advertiser if they click. [Rakuten Rewards (for business), Feb 2025] (opens the source) Search ads insert advertiser branding, logos and copy for chosen keywords. [Rakuten Rewards (for business), Jun 2025] (opens the source) Its sales home also promises visibility in search, AI and competitor sites. [Rakuten Rewards (for business), Oct 2026] (opens the source)
An October 2026 case study showed a home retailer's Similar Store offer to members browsing a competitor, at 2%, 10% and 20% cash back across consecutive weeks. At 20%, daily sales rose from $194 to $15,909; the offer reached 31% of its extension trips and 9% of orders. [Rakuten Rewards (for business), Oct 2026] (opens the source) The weeks used the same audience definition, without a concurrent holdout. Year and sample size aren't stated.
The store being browsed pays nothing for that placement and gets nothing from it. Whether one fires on a particular Shopify store isn't documented. That's the choice Rakuten's model sets up: fund the orders it's credited with, or risk a rival's offer reaching your shoppers. Either way, the number that matters is how many of its orders it started.
"Hide on these sites" is your shopper's reminder setting; toolbar activation still works. [Rakuten Help Center, Jul 2026] (opens the source) The published merchant contact is a new-merchant application, with no removal route. [Rakuten Rewards (for business), Oct 2026] (opens the source)
Answer-engine checks on 19 October 2026 found advice to uninstall the Shopify app, removing your network tracking, and advice implying programme removal ends extension offers. Both confuse the controls. What are creators suing it over?#
Creators sued in February 2025, alleging displaced affiliate tracking at checkout. Most claims survived on 25 September 2026; nothing is proven, no court has determined liability, and merchants aren't parties. [U.S. District Court, N.D. California, Sep 2026] (opens the source)
Oganesyan v. Rakuten USA, Inc., No. 4:25-cv-01534-HSG (N.D. Cal.), began on 13 February 2025 with a YouTube creator's complaint describing "Activate Cash Back". [U.S. District Court, N.D. California, Feb 2025] (opens the source) Four related creator suits were folded in by 30 April 2025. [US District Court, N.D. California (docket), Mar 2025] (opens the source)
The consolidated complaint of 2 September 2025 alleges "Apply Coupons" opens a hidden tab that refreshes the merchant's page so Rakuten's cookie replaces earlier ones, and that shoppers first encounter the extension at checkout. The court accepted allegations as true only for the motion; Rakuten disputes redirects. [US District Court, N.D. California (docket), Oct 2026] (opens the source) [U.S. District Court, N.D. California, Sep 2026] (opens the source)
The order retained standing, unjust enrichment under five states' laws, both interference claims, the federal computer-access claim (CFAA), California's Unfair Competition Law and Florida's deceptive-practices claim. It dismissed conversion and California's data-access claim (CDAFA) with leave to amend within 21 days. The August 2024 terms didn't require dismissal at this stage. [U.S. District Court, N.D. California, Sep 2026] (opens the source)
Rakuten's October 2025 motion, as reported, argues members permit and expect replacement when accepting cash back, and that Rakuten shares commission with consumers. It calls creators competitors. [Coupons in the News, Oct 2025] (opens the source)
On 19 October 2026, CourtListener showed nothing after entry 89 on 14 October; amended pleadings were due 16 October. The mirror can lag, so filing status after that deadline is unknown. [US District Court, N.D. California (docket), Oct 2026] (opens the source) October court lists showed no extension-related federal multidistrict proceeding; regulator searches found no action. [U.S. Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation, Oct 2026] (opens the source) [FTC, UK CMA, Competition Bureau Canada, European Commission, Oct 2026] (opens the source)
Your budget pays the disputed commission, and the alleged moment is your checkout. Your question remains which credited orders another partner started. The order cites rulings in creator suits over Honey, Capital One Shopping, Klarna and RetailMeNot. [U.S. District Court, N.D. California, Sep 2026] (opens the source) The Honey merchant guide covers that context.
What can you control on your storefront, and what at checkout?#
Your storefront theme is yours, so extension prompts there can be detected and hidden. Shopify's checkout isn't: no app can change what an extension shows inside it, so your control there is which codes exist and work.
Browser content scripts have separate JavaScript worlds but share the page DOM. [Chrome for Developers, Oct 2026] (opens the source) Checkout UI extensions run in an isolated sandbox without checkout HTML access. [Shopify developer docs, Jul 2026] (opens the source) Advanced customisation needs Plus. [Shopify Help Center, Oct 2026] (opens the source) Thank you and Order status pages belong to the new checkout too, including the confirmation surface Rakuten says it reads. [Shopify Help Center, Oct 2026] (opens the source)
Shopify's Discount Function API sees typed codes and can accept or reject them with a message; rejection requires an automatic-discount-backed function. [Shopify developer docs, Oct 2026] (opens the source) Public Function apps work on any plan; custom ones need Plus. [Shopify.dev, Oct 2026] (opens the source) There's no official discount-field hiding control; Shopify staff reported no timeline in October 2024. [Shopify Developer Community, Oct 2024] (opens the source)
Give your developer the storefront and checkout guide.
What can you do without an app?#
Each step has an owner. Get them done before peak.
-
See which of your codes it holds. Your discount owner can use the free code check: it asks Rakuten, Honey, Capital One Shopping, Coupert and major voucher sites what they hold, the same way they ask at your checkout, without installing anything. The directory page has its sources in one place. The catch: a listing tells you a code is held, not which of your orders used it.
-
Tighten the codes it can find. Your discount owner moves private offers to unique or single-use codes. Shopify allows 20,000,000 unique codes; bulk creation uses apps or the Admin API, capped at 250 per call. [Shopify Help Center, Oct 2026] (opens the source) [Shopify.dev, Oct 2026] (opens the source) For shared offers, set "Limit number of times this discount can be used in total", "Limit to one per customer", tracked by email or phone, and an end date. [Shopify Help Center, Oct 2026] (opens the source) Eligibility supports up to 100 segments. [Shopify Help Center, Oct 2026] (opens the source) Do this before your code freeze; use the leak guide and unique versus shared codes. The catch: creators can't read unique codes aloud; shared codes work until ended.
-
Find it in each affiliate programme. Your affiliate manager searches Rakuten Rewards and Ebates: Rakuten Advertising listed it as a publisher in 2020, and it reported growth with advertisers tracked on Partnerize in 2024. [Rakuten Advertising, Aug 2020] (opens the source) [Partnerize, Nov 2024] (opens the source) Review quarterly earnings, earlier clicks in path data, stand-down, code-only credit and rate caps in your affiliate terms. Ishtvan Torpoi's test for coupon extensions caps commission at 0.5%, with one unique code for one to two months, and needs overwrite protection first; he explicitly sets cashback platforms aside, so apply only that protection point here. [Hello Partner, Jan 2026] (opens the source) The catch: removing it ends commission, not the extension.
-
Ask your network, not Rakuten, about credit. Your affiliate manager asks which wins between a partner code and Rakuten cookie, whether cashback publishers must stand down, and which referrals count. Rakuten Advertising names its own links; if your programme runs on it, keep its Shopify app, because that's your tracking. [Rakuten Advertising, Jul 2026] (opens the source) [Elevar (docs), Jan 2026] (opens the source) The catch: Rakuten publishes only a merchant sign-up form, no opt-out.
-
Watch your own checkout. Your developer installs the extension in a clean profile, follows a test affiliate link, fills a basket and records prompt timing, activation's cookie changes and checkout offers. The catch: activation needs an account; one browser-day doesn't represent every shopper.
-
Measure which orders it starts. Your growth lead plans holdout measurement, using the how-to guides: randomly retain the old experience for some eligible shoppers. Rakuten's own test found a 13% revenue lift; the unnamed-partner seven-week switch-off found none. [Rakuten Rewards (for business), Oct 2024] (opens the source) [Haus, May 2023] (opens the source) The catch: small stores need weeks; a November start won't read before Cyber Monday.
The sibling guides cover Honey, Capital One Shopping and Coupert; coupon extensions 101 sets the reading order.
How Benson handles the extension on your store#
See it on Free. Extension detection and observe mode show which coupon and cashback extensions your shoppers run, Rakuten included, in which sessions, and what Benson would hide. Observe mode changes nothing on your store. The Checkout rules page lists the codes used most in coupon-extension sessions, and code watch shows whether a leaked code is contained, replaced, or its replacement is spreading.
Hide storefront prompts on Stop and above. Block covers home, product, collection, search, cart and the cart drawer, with schedule, country, source, device and page rules, plus a holdout.
Set your checkout allowlist on Stop and above. With the strict code policy, only allowlisted codes work in coupon-extension sessions; other codes get a short message instead of a discount. Customers without an extension who type your code still get the discount. On Shopify, no app can change an extension's display inside checkout, so protection there works on codes.
Read your affiliate evidence. Benson records arriving affiliate ids, click ids or UTM sources, changes after the cart, the extension detected in that session and estimated commission moved at your rates. Under Affiliates → Integrity, "Extension took the click" opens a case when a coupon or cashback extension was on the page as a partner's click was replaced. It includes sessions, orders, commission, a printable evidence pack and CSV with your order numbers for network matching.
The beta check "Click arrived after checkout started" finds orders with no affiliate click while the basket was filled, then one just before checkout, for example after visiting a cashback site. Your programme decides payment. Checks and counts are free on every plan; cases, evidence and evidence packs need Stop or above. Together they show, on your own store, whether a partner's click was replaced while Rakuten was on the page, with evidence your network can act on. Read how the integrity checks work and the reading path.
Decide your deal. Record your Rakuten agreement, then read how often it joins after the cart using attribution integrity on Stop or above. Keep, renegotiate or cut with the rival-offer trade-off in view; the partner deal playbook walks through it. Every control supports a holdout on your traffic.
Add Benson from the Shopify App Store and leave it in observe mode through a normal week before peak.
Questions merchants ask
- Can you block the Rakuten extension on a Shopify store?
- Storefront prompts can be hidden, but no app can change what the Rakuten extension shows inside Shopify checkout. Codes are your checkout control, and Rakuten publishes no merchant opt-out.
- How does Rakuten make money?
- Stores pay commission on credited orders, and Rakuten passes part to shoppers as cash back, describing its standard split as half each. It also sells paid placements.
- Does Rakuten take credit for other affiliates' sales?
- Its terms say accepting its cash-back offer replaces earlier affiliates' tracking for that store. Creators allege further conduct in a pending case; those allegations haven't been proven and no court has determined liability.
- Does the Rakuten extension stand down for affiliate links?
- No source says it does: Rakuten Advertising's rule binds publishers on its network. Rakuten Rewards published a kit for extension makers, but its help instead tells shoppers to re-activate when another site's link takes over.
- Can I remove my store from Rakuten?
- There's no published merchant removal route. Dropping it from your programme ends commission, while the extension can suggest a similar store offering cash back.
- Does Rakuten work like Honey?
- Both are affiliate-funded extensions offering checkout coupons and facing creator suits. Rakuten centres on cash back and its terms describe tracking replacement after acceptance; the separate Rakuten Advertising network removed Honey in January 2026.
- Is Rakuten legit?
- It's a real affiliate-funded business within Rakuten Group. Its archived August 2026 Chrome listing reported no history of publisher violations; for your store, the useful question is which orders it starts.
