What Klarna does on your store

Klarna's extension tests coupon codes at your checkout with one click and applies the best one, and affiliate networks pay Klarna commission on the orders it touches. It also lets shoppers pay with Klarna on your store through a one-time Visa card, even if you never added Klarna.

In short

Where does it get your codes?

Klarna built the extension on Piggy, a coupon and cash-back extension with 1.2 million users when Klarna bought it, and launched it in December 2021.[TechCrunch, Dec 2021] (opens the source) Klarna's extension FAQ, in an April 2026 copy, described searching the web for coupons, then testing the available codes on the sites where it works.[Klarna US (Wayback Machine capture), Apr 2026] (opens the source)

How does it make money from your orders?

Its Chrome listing says affiliate networks record shoppers' use of coupons, cash back and points to calculate a commission to Klarna.[Chrome Web Store, Oct 2026] (opens the source) The Klarna app also pays shoppers cash back, which Klarna says depends on store approval and can be affected by cookie settings.[Apple App Store, Oct 2026] (opens the source) If it's in your affiliate program, an order where it applied a code can be credited to it under last-click attribution, whoever actually sent the shopper.

Klarna also works as an affiliate publisher on networks such as Awin: brands that pay it commission rank higher and get priority placements in the Klarna app, whether or not they offer Klarna at checkout.[Awin, Jun 2021] (opens the source)

What does it do in a shopper's session?

Its Chrome listing says one click tests different codes and applies the best one to the cart.[Chrome Web Store, Oct 2026] (opens the source) The extension asks for permission to read and change data on every site the shopper visits, and its listing showed 1,000,000 users in October 2026.[Chrome Web Store, Oct 2026] (opens the source) Klarna's FAQ said it also runs in mobile Safari on iPhone through the Klarna app; Android isn't supported.[Klarna US (Wayback Machine capture), Apr 2026] (opens the source)

Shoppers can pay with Klarna on a store that never integrated it: Klarna issues a single-use virtual Visa card, so the store sees an ordinary card payment.[Klarna, Mar 2023] (opens the source)

Klarna's extension FAQ, in an April 2026 copy, said it doesn't prompt coupons or points when it detects the shopper arrived through an affiliate link.[Klarna US (Wayback Machine capture), Apr 2026] (opens the source) A creator's lawsuit filed in Ohio federal court in February 2025 alleged the extension swapped creators' affiliate cookies for Klarna's own at checkout.[Milberg, Mar 2025] (opens the source) The case was dismissed in September 2026.[U.S. District Court, S.D. Ohio, via CourtListener, Sep 2026] (opens the source)

What does it cost you?

Every order where it applies a code gives away the discount, and the shopper was usually already at your checkout with a full basket. If it's in your affiliate program, the same order can also pay it commission under last-click attribution, on top of the discount, whoever actually brought the shopper.

So the cost is the discount plus any commission on orders that would have happened anyway, and the codes it spreads keep working until you replace them.

What Benson does about it

  • Sees Klarna sessions on your storefront, and measures their conversion rate, order value and discount depth against everyone else's.
  • Hides Klarna's pop-up on your storefront pages, by rules you set.
  • Checkout Policies: in sessions where a coupon extension was seen, only the codes on your allowlist work at Shopify checkout.
  • Attribution integrity: flags orders where an extension's affiliate click landed after the shopper arrived from someone else.

Can you get your store removed?

No published route. Klarna publishes no way for a merchant to remove codes or opt a store out of the extension; the only extension-specific contact is the developer email on its Chrome listing, [email protected].[Chrome Web Store, Oct 2026] (opens the source)
