Where does it get your codes?
Anyone can submit a code to RetailMeNot. Its submit form, in a July 2026 copy, asks for publicly available codes only, not private or internal ones, and says to get the merchant's permission when in doubt.[RetailMeNot (Internet Archive copy), Jul 2026] (opens the source) That's guidance to the people submitting, not a merchant removal route.

What does it do in a shopper's session?
Its Chrome listing says the extension finds, tests and applies promo codes and cash back offers automatically at checkout.[Chrome Web Store (Internet Archive copy), Oct 2026] (opens the source) It also ships for Safari on Mac through the Mac App Store.[Apple App Store, Oct 2026] (opens the source) On Microsoft Edge Add-ons it had 231,672 active installs in October 2026.[Microsoft Edge Add-ons, Oct 2026] (opens the source)
On 25 March 2026 a federal judge in In re RetailMeNot Browser Extension Litigation dismissed eight of the creators' nine claims with prejudice, and let their claim of intentional interference with contract proceed.[U.S. District Court, S.D.N.Y., Mar 2026] (opens the source) The creators allege the extension swaps in RetailMeNot's affiliate code through a hidden tab whenever a shopper engages it, even when it finds no coupon. These are allegations, not findings.[U.S. District Court, S.D.N.Y., Mar 2026] (opens the source)
What does it cost you?
Every order where it applies a code gives away the discount, and the shopper was usually already at your checkout with a full basket. If it's in your affiliate program, the same order can also pay it commission under last-click attribution, on top of the discount, whoever actually brought the shopper.
So the cost is the discount plus any commission on orders that would have happened anyway, and the codes it spreads keep working until you replace them.

What Benson does about it
- Sees RetailMeNot sessions on your storefront, and measures their conversion rate, order value and discount depth against everyone else's.
- Hides RetailMeNot's pop-up on your storefront pages, by rules you set.
- Checkout Policies: in sessions where a coupon extension was seen, only the codes on your allowlist work at Shopify checkout.
- Attribution integrity: flags orders where an extension's affiliate click landed after the shopper arrived from someone else.

Questions merchants ask
- How can I stop people using codes from coupon sites that I didn't authorise?
- Write to [email protected], its only extension contact; there's no opt-out.[Chrome Web Store (Internet Archive copy), Oct 2026] (opens the source) Its own submit form asks people to post only public codes, so a private code there breaks its stated rule.[RetailMeNot (Internet Archive copy), Jul 2026] (opens the source) At checkout, the control is which codes work: replace leaked codes and limit who can use them.
