Discount code leak
Jump to a section
In short
When a discount code reaches shoppers it wasn't meant for, through voucher sites, coupon extensions or sharing, and lands on orders it wasn't priced for.
What it means
A code leaks when it travels beyond the audience it was issued to: a creator's followers, an email list, staff or a single customer. Coupon extensions collect codes and offer them to other users. Honey's help centre invites members to add codes they find, which Honey tests before sharing.[Honey Help Center, Oct 2026] (opens the source) Voucher sites list codes from affiliate networks, store emails and shopper tips, so a code posted once can stay findable long after its campaign.
On your store
You give a podcast host a code for their listeners. A month later it's on several voucher sites and an extension applies it at checkout, so it turns up on orders from shoppers who never heard the show.
Why it matters
A leaked code discounts orders that would have paid full price, and when a partner's click is on the order you can pay commission on top. In 2017 UGG cancelled orders placed with a 60%-off code from an internal employee event that had reached the public.[NBC Connecticut, Dec 2017] (opens the source)
What Benson does
The free code check shows which of your codes extensions and voucher sites hold. Checkout Policies: in sessions where Benson saw a coupon extension, only allowlisted codes work at Shopify checkout.
