What PayPal Honey does on your store
Honey tries the discount codes it has collected for your store at checkout, applies the best one, and can claim the order's affiliate commission. It runs in the shopper's browser, so nothing in your theme switched it on.

In short
- It finds codes from its members as well as from you, so codes you never published can end up in it.[Honey Help Center, Oct 2026] (opens the source)
- It pops up at checkout, tests its codes and applies the one that works.[Honey Help Center, Oct 2026] (opens the source)
- It earns commission from merchants' affiliate programs and passes part of it to shoppers as rewards.[Chrome Web Store, Oct 2026] (opens the source)
- It publishes a route for removing codes not meant for public use: [email protected].[Honey (PayPal), Oct 2026] (opens the source)
Where does it get your codes?
Honey's members can add codes to its list for your store themselves, so it isn't limited to the codes you publish.[Honey Help Center, Oct 2026] (opens the source) MegaLag's December 2025 investigation, as reported by PPC Land, alleges that Honey uploaded codes shoppers typed at checkout before they answered its consent prompt, including a friends-and-family code one brand had never published.[PPC Land, Dec 2025] (opens the source)
How does it make money from your orders?
Honey earns commission from merchants' affiliate programs and shares part of it with shoppers as rewards.[Chrome Web Store, Oct 2026] (opens the source) If Honey is in your program, an order where it applied a code can be credited to Honey under last-click attribution, whoever actually sent the shopper.
Google's Chrome Web Store rules, enforced from June 2025, let an extension add an affiliate link or cookie only after the shopper acts and only when they get a direct benefit.[Chrome for Developers, Mar 2025] (opens the source) In January 2026 Rakuten Advertising cut Honey off from its network.[PPC Land, Jan 2026] (opens the source) The same month impact.com suspended it and Awin suspended its payments.[PPC Land, Jan 2026] (opens the source) In May 2026 PPC Land reported, citing a TopCashback executive, that Honey was back live on Rakuten Advertising after adopting Rakuten's open-source stand-down SDK; Rakuten hasn't confirmed it.[PPC Land, May 2026] (opens the source)
What does it do in a shopper's session?
Honey says it pops up at checkout to test the codes it found, and applies a working one to the order.[Honey Help Center, Oct 2026] (opens the source) The creators' proposed class action over Honey is still open: in June 2026 the court refused to dismiss the second amended complaint.[US District Court, N.D. California, Jun 2026] (opens the source) No court has found Honey liable.
What does it cost you?
Every order where it applies a code gives away the discount, and the shopper was usually already at your checkout with a full basket. If it's in your affiliate program, the same order can also pay it commission under last-click attribution, on top of the discount, whoever actually brought the shopper.
So the cost is the discount plus any commission on orders that would have happened anyway, and the codes it spreads keep working until you replace them.

What Benson does about it
- Sees PayPal Honey sessions on your storefront, and measures their conversion rate, order value and discount depth against everyone else's.
- Hides PayPal Honey's pop-up on your storefront pages, by rules you set.
- Checkout Policies: in sessions where a coupon extension was seen, only the codes on your allowlist work at Shopify checkout.
- Attribution integrity: flags orders where an extension's affiliate click landed after the shopper arrived from someone else.
