What the Capital One Shopping extension does on your Shopify store, and how to control it
Capital One Shopping tests codes at your checkout. What it does on a Shopify store, what it costs, what the lawsuit changed, and what you can control.

In short
It's mid-October. You're building your peak-week commission plan, and Capital One Shopping sits near the top of your network's publisher report, credited with September orders. Nobody can tell you which of those journeys it started.
That week, a sales email pitches its Shopify app to recover lost sales. Your support team forwards a ticket about a code the Capital One Shopping extension offered but your checkout refused. You don't know which other codes it holds, or whether the creators' lawsuit changed anything.
This matters most if your store has US traffic: Forbes Advisor says the full service is US-only. [Forbes Advisor, Oct 2026] (opens the source) This guide covers what the extension does on a Shopify store, what it costs, what the settlement changed for merchants, and what you can control before peak.
What does the extension do on a Shopify store?#
The Capital One Shopping extension offers to test codes at participating retailers, generally wherever a promo code field is present, applies the best working code, sometimes automatically, and offers Shopping Rewards at commission-paying partners. It records which codes work so it can share them with other shoppers. [Capital One Shopping Help Center, Oct 2026] (opens the source)
Its help centre describes a notification at the cart or checkout, followed by the shopper clicking to try codes. Sometimes the best promotion goes into the cart without that click. Your partnership status doesn't determine whether a shopper brings it to your store.
Section 3.4 of its terms, updated 16 July 2026, separates the code supply: for non-partners it sources publicly available and shared codes; partners supply shareable codes directly. [Capital One Shopping Holdings, LLC, Jul 2026] (opens the source) The help centre calls shoppers who find successful codes the community. Your email code can therefore have a life beyond the customer you sent it to.
The privacy policy, effective 31 July 2026, covers purchases, prices paid, whether codes work, and coupons users find even if they don't use them, so those coupons can be shared. [Capital One Shopping, Jul 2026] (opens the source) A code doesn't need to produce an order before it can enter that inventory.
At partner stores, shoppers click Activate to earn Shopping Rewards, redeemable for gift cards rather than cash. Capital One says it shares merchant commission with shoppers. [Capital One Shopping, Oct 2026] (opens the source) [Capital One Shopping Help Center, Oct 2026] (opens the source) Its help centre advises disabling other rewards extensions and warns that promo codes found on other sites may interfere with earning its rewards. Your commission rules and your code policy meet on the same order. [Capital One Shopping Help Center, Oct 2026] (opens the source)
Ads With Benefits are sliding offer cards triggered by a savings opportunity; the help centre says there's no built-in switch to disable them. Price comparison is built around big marketplaces: the help centre describes Amazon pages and its own search, while the published Edge file list declares its price-comparison script only for amazon.com, bestbuy.com, homedepot.com and zappos.com. That doesn't establish rival-price displays on your Shopify store. [Capital One Shopping Help Center, Oct 2026] (opens the source) [Microsoft Edge Add-ons, Oct 2026] (opens the source)
Reach figures overlap. The Chrome Web Store's latest archived capture, 26 September 2026, showed 11,000,000 users, the same figure Capital One's homepage cites. [Chrome Web Store, Sep 2026] (opens the source) [Capital One Shopping, Oct 2026] (opens the source) Edge showed 5,199,728 active installs on 17 October 2026. [Microsoft Edge Add-ons, Oct 2026] (opens the source) Firefox's listing that day showed 467,119 daily users on a build last updated in August 2024. [Mozilla Add-ons, Aug 2024] (opens the source) Safari is supported, including an extension in the iOS app. These aren't unique people to add together. It launched as Wikibuy, which Capital One bought in November 2018, and took its current name in 2020. [CNBC, Nov 2018] (opens the source) [Capital One Shopping, Oct 2026] (opens the source) FlexOffers advertises $9 per extension install to publishers recruiting users, with restrictions and unclear current programme status. That's acquisition spend, not your merchant rate. [FlexOffers, Jun 2025] (opens the source)
Before your team installs it to investigate, read section 13.2: merchant representatives using the service consent on the merchant's behalf to collection of its site content despite contrary site terms. [Capital One Shopping Holdings, LLC, Jul 2026] (opens the source) The free code check lets you see what it holds without installing it.
What does it cost your store?#
Partners pay commission on credited orders; in PartnerCentric's measured sample, most weren't journeys the extension started. Non-partners pay no commission to it, but still fund any discount from a code it finds. [PartnerCentric, Feb 2025] (opens the source) [Capital One Shopping Holdings, LLC, Jul 2026] (opens the source)
16%
of conversions credited to Capital One Shopping originated with it among clients of PartnerCentric, a US affiliate agency, in Q4 2024, across client verticals. Client geography and order counts weren't supplied.
The same release puts the coupon, loyalty and cashback average at 13%, Honey at 2% and Rakuten Rewards at 40%. PartnerCentric sells commission-adjustment tools. [PartnerCentric, Feb 2025] (opens the source) Not originating a journey doesn't mean the purchase would have happened without the extension. Your finance lead needs that distinction before treating credited revenue as additional revenue.
Capital One's homepage describes merchant-paid commission; its business deals page also discloses preferred placements paid for by merchants at the top. [Capital One Shopping, Oct 2026] (opens the source) [Capital One Shopping, Oct 2026] (opens the source) Its 2025 10-K doesn't separate Shopping revenue: it names Shopping first within $1,264 million of Other non-interest income, alongside treasury income, auto services and other investment income. [Capital One Financial Corporation, Feb 2026] (opens the source)
There is a partner case. In June 2025, Capital One said its extension doesn't replace affiliate marketers' cookies or unlawfully take credit for commissions, and argued that merchants control how commissions are allocated. [Hello Partner, Jun 2025] (opens the source) Awin says it won Best Performance-Based Partnership at the 2025 US Partnership Awards for its collaboration with Etsy and Capital One, a relationship Awin earns from. Where did the lawsuit land, and what changed for merchants?#
The creators' class action settled, with the final approval order filed on 22 September 2026 after a June hearing. Capital One denies wrongdoing, merchants weren't class members, and the stand-down commitment covers only networks and merchants that partner with Capital One Shopping. [U.S. District Court, E.D. Va., Sep 2026] (opens the source) [CourtListener, Dec 2025] (opens the source)
The creators alleged in 2025 that the extension took the last click and commission on sales they referred. On 2 June 2025, the court allowed unjust enrichment, interference and federal CFAA claims to proceed while dismissing others. That ruling decided which claims could continue, not whether the allegations were true. [CourtListener, Jun 2025] (opens the source)
| Date | What happened | What it means for a merchant |
|---|---|---|
| 6 Jan 2025 | First creator complaint. [CourtListener, Jan 2025] (opens the source) | Affiliate claims, not merchant compensation. |
| 2 Jun 2025 | Motion to dismiss partly denied. [CourtListener, Jun 2025] (opens the source) | Surviving allegations remained unproven. |

This was claims-made, with payments based on eligible claims. Counsel's July supplement reported 810 timely claims and 18 approved: three proof payments totalling $3,056.96 and fifteen payments of $20. Those are approved amounts, not confirmation of receipt. [CourtListener, Jul 2026] (opens the source)
$3,950,000
in attorneys' fees and costs approved by the court, paid by Capital One separately from class relief. It wasn't a fund distributed to creators.
For at least two years from the order, section 3.5 requires best efforts to comply with stand-down rules set by affiliate networks and merchants that partner with Capital One Shopping. Stand-down means respecting rules about when to leave existing affiliate credit alone. Your programme needs rules for that promise to refer to. [CourtListener, Dec 2025] (opens the source)
The agreement also requires an ombudsman with a published email for merchants, networks and publishers. On 17 October 2026, the help centre hadn't published that address; its only published contact was [email protected]. [Capital One Shopping Help Center, Nov 2024] (opens the source) For a non-partner store, the settlement changes nothing at checkout: it doesn't withdraw the codes the extension holds.
Keep the other cases separate. Tollaksen is an ongoing shopper-rewards case in Virginia. [CourtListener, Aug 2026] (opens the source) McNichols concerns Capital One Offers for cardholders, not the extension. Chrome's affiliate policy, enforced from 10 June 2025, says extensions mustn't insert affiliate links when no coupon or discount is found. [Chrome for Developers, Mar 2025] (opens the source) Its policy requires related user action before each affiliate link, code or cookie; it doesn't require stand-down, so Activate can supply the action without protecting earlier credit. [Chrome for Developers, Mar 2025] (opens the source)
For the earlier ruling, Gamers Nexus's June 2025 walk-through covers the motion to dismiss; it earns from affiliate links and was a plaintiff against Honey, and the video predates the settlement. [GamersNexus Consumer Advocacy, Jun 2025] (opens the source)
What can you control on your storefront, and what at checkout?#
Your storefront theme allows extension pop-ups and offer cards to be detected and hidden. Shopify controls checkout, where no app can change what an extension shows, so your control there is which codes exist and work. [Shopify Changelog, Feb 2023] (opens the source) Read what you can stop on the storefront and in checkout before choosing a control.
Capital One's Shopify app is a partnership tool: share coupons, generate single-use codes and run retargeting alerts. From Capital One Ad Solutions, it launched on 25 June 2025 and had no reviews on 17 October 2026. It asks to view customers and the last 60 days of orders, and edit discounts, gift cards and web pixels. Installing it establishes a partner route; it doesn't switch off the shopper's extension. [Shopify App Store, Jun 2025] (opens the source)
An answer-engine result recorded on 17 October 2026 treated uninstalling that app as a control. Another recommended a script inside checkout. Neither recommendation gives your developer access to the extension's checkout display. Decide which surface you're changing before choosing a tool.
What can you do without an app?#
You can review your code inventory, eligibility and affiliate terms before changing your site. Give each action an owner before your peak-week commission decisions.
-
See which of your codes it already holds. Run the free code check: it asks Capital One Shopping, Honey and the big voucher sites what they hold for your store without installing anything. The catch: it shows inventory, not how often shoppers use it.
-
Tighten the codes it can find. Your discount owner can move private offers to unique or single-use codes, add customer eligibility, usage limits and end dates, and replace leaked codes. See stopping discount code leaks and unique versus shared codes. The catch: an exposed code keeps working for anyone holding it until you end it.
-
Read its line in each affiliate programme. Your affiliate manager should check Capital One Shopping and Wikibuy: active status, quarter's earnings, journeys started and terms on code-only credit, capped rates and stand-down. Use the agreement terms guide and partner test guide before the peak-week rate bump and your code freeze. The catch: the settlement promises best efforts for partners only; programme removal ends commission, not the extension.
-
Write to Capital One if you need a code withdrawn. Use [email protected]; no ombudsman address was published on 17 October 2026. Partners can share coupons and generate single-use codes through its Shopify app. [Capital One Shopping Help Center, Nov 2024] (opens the source) [Shopify App Store, Jun 2025] (opens the source) The catch: no merchant code-removal or testing opt-out process is published, and withdrawal doesn't invalidate copies already held.
-
Check your own apps and checkout flow. Ask your developer to place a test order in a clean browser and investigate pop-ups your team didn't add. The catch: one browser's experience doesn't cover every shopper's.
-
Measure which orders it starts. Have your growth lead plan a holdout: randomly selected eligible shoppers keep the existing experience while others receive the control. The catch: small stores need weeks of traffic; a November start won't read before Cyber Monday.
For the same controls on another extension, read how to block Honey on your Shopify store, and for its lawsuit context, what the Honey scandal cost merchants.
How Benson handles the extension on your store#
Benson follows the same sequence: see the sessions, set storefront and code rules, inspect credit changes, then measure your decision.
Free: extension detection and observe mode. Benson shows which extensions your shoppers run, including Capital One Shopping, in which sessions, and what it would hide. Observe mode changes nothing on your store. The Checkout rules page lists codes used most in coupon-extension sessions; code watch shows whether a leaked code is contained, replaced, or its replacement is spreading.
Block, on Stop and above. Benson hides extension pop-ups by rule on your home, product, collection, search and cart pages, and the cart drawer, with a holdout.
Strict code policy, on Stop and above. Only allowlisted codes work in coupon-extension sessions; other codes receive a short message instead of a discount. Customers without an extension who type the code you sent still receive it. On Shopify, no app can change what an extension shows inside checkout, so protection there works on the codes.
Attribution integrity, on Stop and above. Benson records the affiliate id, click id or UTM source your shopper arrives with: Awin, impact.com and CJ click ids, UTM tags, the ref parameter and first-party affiliate cookies you list. When credit changes after the cart, it records the overwrite, shows extensions detected in that session and estimates commission moved at your rates.
Partner deals and holdouts. If you partner with the extension, record your deal and read how often it joins after the cart, then keep, renegotiate or cut it. The partner deal playbook covers that decision. Every control can run against a holdout, measuring the result on your own traffic.
To start, add Benson from the Shopify App Store and leave it in observe mode through a normal week before peak.
Questions merchants ask
- Can you block Capital One Shopping on a Shopify store?
- You can hide its pop-ups on your storefront. No app can change what the extension shows inside Shopify checkout, where your control is which codes work.
- Does Capital One Shopping work on Shopify stores?
- Yes. The Capital One Shopping extension offers code testing at participating retailers, generally on the cart or checkout page where a promo code field is present; you don't need its merchant partnership app for shoppers to bring it to your store.
- Where does Capital One Shopping get its coupon codes?
- Its terms say it sources publicly available and shared codes for non-partner stores, while partner merchants supply shareable codes directly. Its privacy policy also covers recording whether codes work and collecting coupons users find even when they don't use them, for sharing.
- Is the Capital One Shopping Shopify app a way to control it?
- It's a partner tool for sharing coupons, generating single-use codes and running retargeting alerts. It doesn't switch off or control the shopper's browser extension.
- Did the Capital One Shopping settlement change anything for merchants?
- For at least two years from the final approval order filed on 22 September 2026, Capital One committed to best efforts on partner stand-down rules and an ombudsman with a published email. Merchants weren't class members, and the settlement changes nothing at a non-partner store's checkout.
- Is Capital One Shopping legit?
- It's a real Capital One product that earns commission from stores on eligible purchases. For your store, the useful question is which orders it starts and what you're prepared to pay for the ones it joins later.
