Extension permissions
Jump to a section
In short
The access a shopper grants a browser extension when installing it, such as reading and changing data on every site, which lets it act on your store.
What it means
When a shopper installs an extension, the browser lists what it may do and the shopper accepts. Access to the sites they visit is what lets a coupon extension see your checkout and type into it. Klarna's extension, for example, asks for permission to read and change data on every site the shopper visits.[Chrome Web Store, Oct 2026] (opens the source) The extension runs in the shopper's browser, not on your site. Chrome's documentation says content scripts run in an isolated environment your page's own code can't reach.[Chrome for Developers, Oct 2026] (opens the source) A Content Security Policy doesn't switch extensions off: the W3C's CSP Level 3 draft says policies should leave extensions operating.[W3C, Sep 2026] (opens the source)
On your store
A shopper installed a cashback extension two years ago and clicked Allow. Today it reads your product page and cart and slides a panel over your checkout button, and nothing in your theme loaded it.
Why it matters
Only the shopper can remove an extension or take back its permissions. What you control is what your pages show it and which codes your checkout accepts.
What Benson does
Benson hides extension pop-ups on storefront pages by rules you set.
