In short

When a coupon extension enters codes into a store's discount field one after another and keeps the one that gives the biggest saving.

What it means

Auto-apply is the step where an extension types codes into the checkout's discount field itself, reads whether each one was accepted, and leaves the best one on the order. Capital One Shopping's help centre says it tests codes generally wherever a promo code field is present, and applies the best working code, sometimes automatically.[Capital One Shopping Help Center, Oct 2026] (opens the source) AI agents that operate a browser can do the same. Google says Chrome's auto browse can apply discount codes while shopping.[Google, Jan 2026] (opens the source)

On your store

Your discount field fills and clears several times while a panel shows a progress bar. When it stops, a code from last year's sale is on the order.

Why it matters

Auto-apply tries whatever is still live. A code you stopped promoting keeps working, and keeps costing margin, until you end it or limit who can use it. The shopper didn't have to know the code existed, so the discount lands on orders it was never meant to win.

What Benson does

Checkout Policies: in sessions where Benson saw a coupon extension, only allowlisted codes work at Shopify checkout.
