Extension affiliate
Jump to a section
In short
An affiliate publisher whose clicks come from software the shopper installed, such as a browser extension, which networks police under separate rules.
What it means
An extension affiliate is a publisher that reaches shoppers through software they installed rather than a page they visited. CJ's policy calls them downloadable software publishers.[CJ, Aug 2022] (opens the source) Because the software is present on every store the shopper visits, it can click late in a visit someone else started, so networks add rules for it such as stand-down. Awin puts any publisher running an extension on Soft Click by default, so it can't override an earlier partner's click.[Awin, Aug 2025] (opens the source) Since 10 June 2025 the Chrome Web Store has required a user action before an extension applies any affiliate link, code or cookie.[Chrome for Developers, Mar 2025] (opens the source)
On your store
Your network report lists a cashback site as one publisher. Some of its orders came from shoppers who visited its website; others came from its extension, which appeared on your checkout page.
Why it matters
In 2024, 88% of US brands in the PMA's survey allowed toolbars and extensions in their programs.[Performance Marketing Association, Oct 2024] (opens the source) The PMA said members would vote on a proposed industry toolbar standard from 1 September 2026. It isn't binding.[Performance Marketing Association, Aug 2026] (opens the source)
What Benson does
