Agentic commerce
Jump to a section
In short
Shopping in which an AI assistant or agent finds, compares and sometimes buys products for a person, in a chat or in a browser it controls.
What it means
Agentic commerce covers purchases where software acting for the shopper does part of the work: searching, comparing, filling the cart, applying codes or checking out. It runs on new standards between stores and AI platforms. The Universal Commerce Protocol, co-developed by Google and Shopify, has a discount extension for carts and checkouts.[Universal Commerce Protocol, Aug 2026] (opens the source) OpenAI and Stripe made discount codes the first extension of their Agentic Commerce Protocol.[Agentic Commerce Protocol, Jan 2026] (opens the source)
On your store
A shopper asks an assistant for a waterproof jacket within a budget. It suggests yours and links to the product page, and the shopper buys on your site or without leaving the chat.
Why it matters
Morgan Stanley's December 2025 base case puts agentic shopping at 1% of US ecommerce spend in 2026. It's a research estimate, not a count of orders.[Morgan Stanley, Dec 2025] (opens the source) Shopify's default agentic setting, 'Allow Shopify to manage for me', turns on catalog access, direct checkout where supported and enrolment in new AI channels.[Shopify Help Center, Oct 2026] (opens the source)
