Agent checkout
Jump to a section
In short
A purchase an AI platform completes for the shopper inside its own app, passing the order to the store instead of sending the shopper to its checkout.
What it means
Agent checkout is when the order is placed inside the AI platform, such as a chat app, and passed to the store, rather than the shopper finishing on the store's checkout page. OpenAI launched Instant Checkout in ChatGPT in September 2025.[OpenAI, Sep 2025] (opens the source) Shopify says ChatGPT buyers now complete the purchase on the store's own checkout, in ChatGPT's in-app browser or a new tab.[Shopify Help Center, Oct 2026] (opens the source) The Agentic Commerce Protocol's draft discount RFC describes lists of applied and rejected codes, and says rate limiting should be applied to prevent discount code enumeration.[Agentic Commerce Protocol, Jan 2026] (opens the source)
On your store
A shopper asks an assistant for a gift, picks your mug and pays in the chat. The order arrives in your admin from an AI channel, with no product page view or checkout visit in your analytics.
Why it matters
Orders that skip your pages also skip your page tags, so your analytics and anything that runs on your storefront don't see them. Shopify's agentic sales reports combine referral and direct-checkout sales, and direct checkout has no client-side pixels.[Shopify Help Center, Oct 2026] (opens the source)
