AI referral traffic
Jump to a section
In short
Visits that start from a link in an AI assistant's answer, such as ChatGPT, Perplexity or Gemini, which analytics can miss or misfile.
What it means
AI referral traffic is the set of sessions that start when a shopper clicks a link in an AI assistant's answer. It's different from AI crawlers, which fetch your pages with no shopper involved, and from AI agents, which shop for one.
On your store
A shopper asks an assistant which running shoes suit wide feet, clicks your product in the answer and buys. If the visit carries no referrer, your analytics may record the order as direct.
