Install Benson with Google Tag Manager
Add the Benson snippet as a Custom HTML tag in Google Tag Manager, publish the container, and verify.
If your store already runs Google Tag Manager, you can add Benson without touching your theme. These are the same steps the setup wizard shows.
Your snippet#
Your real snippet, with your site key, is in the setup wizard and under Site settings → Install. It looks like this:

- In Google Tag Manager, open your container and click New tag.
- Choose Tag Configuration → Custom HTML.
- Paste the snippet into the HTML box.
- Set the trigger to Initialization – All Pages and save the tag.
- Click Submit, then Publish. Preview mode alone doesn't reach your shoppers.
Publish, don't just preview#
Tags only reach shoppers after Submit → Publish. Preview mode (Tag Assistant) shows the tag to you alone, and Benson ignores preview traffic, so the wizard won't verify until the container is published.
Prefer a template?#
The wizard also offers a Benson tag template for GTM (download it from the install step). It does the same thing with a site key field instead of Custom HTML.
Consent#
If you use a consent management platform through GTM, keep the trigger on Initialization – All Pages and let Benson read consent itself: see Consent and storage. Don't block the tag behind consent, or Benson can't respect a shopper's choice correctly.
