Discount stacking
Jump to a section
In short
More than one discount on the same order, such as an automatic sale plus a code, so the combined reduction is deeper than either one alone.
What it means
Discount stacking is two or more discounts landing on one order: an automatic sale, a code, a free-shipping offer or a bundle price. On Shopify, discounts combine only where each one's combination settings allow it.[Shopify Help Center, Oct 2026] (opens the source) Shopify applies product discounts first, then order discounts on the reduced subtotal, then shipping, and a shopper can enter up to five product or order codes plus one shipping code on an order.[Shopify Help Center, Oct 2026] (opens the source)
On your store
Your sitewide sale takes a fifth off. A shopper adds a welcome code and a free-shipping code on top, and your settings let all three combine.
Why it matters
The class of each discount changes the total: a 10% product discount followed by a 10% order discount is 19% off, while two 10% order discounts are 20% off.[Shopify Help Center, Oct 2026] (opens the source) Coupon extensions try every code they hold, so any combination your settings allow is one they can find.
What Benson does
Benson measures discount depth in coupon-extension sessions, next to their conversion rate and order value.

- Margin leakageMargin lost to discounts, commission and fees on orders that didn't need them: small on each order, large across a year.
- Shared discount codeOne code, like SPRING20, that anyone can enter as often as its limits allow. Easy to say and share, and just as easy to copy.
